I have taught since 2007 and my teaching philosophy is grounded in two theories, the conceptualization of empowerment theory by Lorraine M. Gutiérrez and Edith A. Lewis (1999) and cultural capital originally developed by a French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and expanded for use in the U.S. by American sociologist Annette Lareau. Drawing on these frameworks, I seek to expose the unwritten rules and expectations within higher education and beyond, critique these requirements as an engaged community, and create space for students to build on their existing strengths and take their skills to the next level.
